Assistive Services

Assistive Services improve or promote the person’s health, independence, and integration in the community. Assistive services at Simsbury Public Library include:

  • Books to Your Door – SPL’s Books to Your Door program allows patrons who cannot physicallly come to the library to order books over the phone and have them delivered and returned free of charge.
  • Large Print – SPL has a wide selection of books that are offered in a large print format that are easy to read.
  • Audiobooks – SPL maintains a large collection of physical and downloable audiobooks, An audiobook (or a talking book) is a recording of a book or other work being read out loud. For assistance downloading an eaudiobook contact the library at 860-658-7663, then press 2.
  • Video Recordings for the Hearing Impaired – SPL offers a large selection of DVDs that have subtitles that can be seen with a closed-captioned decoder or with a built-in decoder on newer televisions. Most feature DVDs come with optional subtitles as well.
  • Video recordings for People with Visual Disabilities – These films have special narration which describes the action, characters, costumes, locations and sets to a viewer with visual disabilities without interfering with the movie’s dialogue or sound effects.
  • Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped – The Connecticut State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH) is a network library of the Library of Congress’ National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS). LBPH lends books and magazines in audio and braille formats, for free, to any Connecticut resident who is unable to read regular print due to a visual, reading, or physical disability.
  • Connecticut Radio Information System (CRIS) – The Connecticut Radio Information System (CRIS), is Connecticut’s only radio reading service. CRIS broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from regional satellite studios in Danbury, Norwalk, Norwich, Trumbull, West Haven, and Windsor.
  • Relay Connecticut – Relay Connecticut is a service at no cost that enables people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind or those with a Speech Disability to place and receive phone calls.

The Simsbury Public Library is committed to dismantling physical barriers to access to ensure that programs and events may be enjoyed by all visitors. The Library provides accommodations by request for physical access, communications or other needs to ensure services, activities and programs are available to people with disabilities. Hearing devices are available upon request at the time of a program.
